A edição de 2021 do Video Music Awards (VMA), aconteceu na noite do último domingo (12), em Nova York, nos Estados Unidos, e reuniu os maiores artistas da música para premiar os melhores videoclipes do último ano.

O Brasil também marcou presença com a cantora Anitta, que se tornou a primeira artista brasileira a se apresentar no VMA, uma das principais premiações de música global transmitida anualmente pela MTV americana. Anitta fez uma apresentação pré-gravada de “Girl From Rio”, música-título do seu quinto álbum de estúdio. A canção conta com um sample do clássico de Tom Jobim, “Garota de Ipanema”, em remix com o rapper americano DaBaby.

Nas redes sociais, Anitta compartilhou fotos para comemorar o evento: “Pisar nos VMAs como a primeira artista brasileira na história parece algo assim”, escreveu.

Doja Cat foi a anfitriã da noite. Olivia Rodrigo, Lil Nas X, Camila Cabello, Shawn Mendes, Twenty One Pilots, entre outros nomes, se apresentaram no evento. Após seis anos, Justin Bieber retorna aos palcos junto com The Kid Laroi para cantar “Stay” e “Ghost”.

Madonna fez uma aparição surpresa na premiação. Com uma edição falando sobre o início de sua carreira, ela subiu ao palco vestindo um body de couro ao som de “Vogue”. “E disseram que a gente não ia durar”, alfinetou ela, referindo-se tanto a si mesma como à MTV, que completa 40 anos.

Justin Bieber e Meghan Thee Stallion lideraram as indicações com 7 e 6 nomeações respectivamente. Os dois artistas concorreram na categoria Artista do Ano com Ariana Grande, Doja Cat, Olivia Rodrigo e Taylor Swift, vencida por Bieber.
